Users Discontinuing Weight-Loss Injections Put On Weight Far More Rapidly Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

New research suggests that people who discontinue new slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on lost weight far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle regimens.

Findings released in a major health publication points out that while obese individuals often shed about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People using these drugs need to be cognizant of the potential of rapid weight regain when the treatment concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery suggests a return to original weight in about a year and a half.

Comparing Approaches

The research, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

The team note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically see a slower weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

The Reason for the Quick Rebound

Experts believe the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the heightened rebound.

These medications copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Withdrawal of this medication leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Disease?

The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts say that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment might need to be life-long.

This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "highlight the long-term nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have come off the jabs explain a intense return of appetite.

"It felt as if something activating and you're instantly ravenous," said an individual.

This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Figures show that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand remaining high.

  • Use is greater among women compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

In conclusion, researchers caution that while these medications are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing lifestyle management.
