They're Repeating to America What They Performed to Christianity

The Trump phenomenon's most illuminating and defining moments – not its most important, nor cruelest, nor most threatening, nor most foolish, but perhaps its most illuminating – occurred earlier this fall. Over the span of multiple weeks, the nation's leader began displaying the public his plans for a gilded ballroom twice the size compared to the White House and subsequently started unilaterally ripping down the East Wing portion to build it.

He has committed acts countless times more severe – the existing assessment of fatalities from his cuts to international aid stands at 600,000 and growing, and presently an analysis forecast his petroleum strategies would cause deaths another 1.3 million. Yet nothing as characteristic. No previous president would have attempted – truly, no other president would have contemplated – independently wrecking major areas of the presidential residence to build a royal-themed celebration hall, with the direct cooperation of some of the richest Americans, almost all of whom conduct transactions with the government.

As confusing as it is to observe the president attempt to overturn the old idea of democracy and substitute it with its direct contrary, there is one large group of Americans who might not perceive it totally unfamiliar. That is those of us – in older age cohorts close to half – who were educated as conventional Protestant believers.

We have watched across decades as rightwing evangelical churches turned the Jesus we learned about into the total contrary of our understanding of him. At its most basic, they transformed an image of affection into a figure of hostility who blesses exactly the harshness that he condemned in scripture; this transformation occurred more gradually, over decades instead of months, but it is nonetheless unsettling through similar means, a confusing personal impact for countless people.

A Toxic Christianity Takes Hold

Therefore allow me to outline the Savior from my upbringing, because theoretically Jesus is the center of any Christian faith, and since the quickly increasing segment among Americans may possess limited understanding regarding him because they identify as skeptics or doubters or religiously unaffiliated. I have no problem with any of these traditions, nor with any other faith; but I do think that exist valuable insights of great price within Christian narrative.

The obvious and straightforward truth that the Savior from scripture requests a form of radical love concentrated on the impoverished has consistently rendered the Christian faith something of a controversial faith: appealing to the general public, but due to its intrinsic extremism requiring to be contained. During the 1950s it was restrained through watering down – Protestant Christianity was so prevalent that it practically baptized the status quo.

A Conflict for the Highest Within Us

Hence I have become encouraged to see the persistent defiance against Trump develop over the last twelve months. It has been substantial consolation to help build the initiative that has taken to the streets via continuous gatherings, and seems to have inspired citizens to participate in numbers in interim political contests.
