Jair Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The ex-president was found guilty of planning a government overthrow in the ninth month and handed more than 27 years in incarceration, but he remained under house arrest pending legal challenges.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" emerged.

This encompassed seeking to disable his tracking device and a call for a public vigil that could "allow for a possible escape.

Legal Document Reveals Flight Fears

In a paperwork permitting the custody, the magistrate said data from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his escape.

This, it said, would be assisted by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.

His child, his son Flávio, who holds office as a legislator, called for a meeting of his supporters near Bolsonaro's home to take place on the weekend.

The senator wrote on digital networks on Friday: "Are you going to fight for your country, or see it all from your phone there on your sofa? I urge you to fight with us."

He said the vigil would be so backers could offer prayers for his well-being and for the restoration of democratic rule in our nation."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of the judge's decision was the potential of the former president's "relocation to embassies near the home, considering that the inquiries revealed a record of organizing to seek refuge through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.

The judicial paperwork highlights that the American diplomatic mission in the national capital, the capital city, is positioned around approximately 13 kilometers from his dwelling.

Global Responses

The former president's legal troubles have drawn the ire of fellow right-wing populist US President Trump, prompting him to impose a half-rate duty on imports of Brazilian goods.

He is being held in a Federal Police station in Brazil's capital city and will have a detention review on the next day.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on Friday that the his legal team asked the Top Court to permit him to fulfill his full incarceration period under domestic detention, with digital surveillance.

They also asked that the former president be allowed to depart his residence for healthcare, saying he demanded regular treatment for pulmonary infections and other ailments.

Context of Sentencing

He was convicted of leading a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he failed to win the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, President Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he had knowledge of a plot which included plans to assassinate the current president and his VP candidate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to imprison and murder the presiding judge - the High Court judge who has been overseeing Bolsonaro's trial.

The conspiracy was prevented because it couldn't obtain the support of the army and air force commanders. The current president was inaugurated without problem on the first day of 2023.

But a week later, on 8 January, many Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed government buildings in the capital, the capital city.

The law enforcement stepped in and around approximately 1,500 persons were taken into custody.

The justices found that the protesters had been incited by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the country's army to take action, bring back stability and return him to office.

At the time, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the 27 years and three months sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also barred from seeking elected position until the year 2060 - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.

The ex-leader called the court case a "witch hunt and said it was designed to prevent him running in the next presidential race.
