At least thirteen people perish and 98 injured in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and execution of the country's flagship government projects.

The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link built to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.

“We will rigorously clarify the reasons behind this accident,” stated the head of state.

The official confirmed that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The leader added plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Major Initiative of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose term finished the prior year. This project was intimately linked to his administration's economic goals for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The construction of both train projects was overseen by the nation's military, marking a notable increase of its role in public works. They were built at an fast-tracked pace, defying expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently sparked significant concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This includes an earlier accident this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the catastrophe, the head of a major opposition party demanded an urgent pause in the building and running of all such projects.

This pause was suggested while awaiting a thorough safety audit. The party emphasized that the tragedy "calls for prompt explanations."

In reaction, the president asserted that the train had been running in complete adherence to all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and management of these national initiatives.
